Bass Lake

Overview

Bass Lake may be accessed from Hwy #11 either at Washago via the Coopers Falls Road, or from north of Gravenhurst by taking the Doe Lake Road east.    Located at on the East Side of a year round municipally maintained District Road #6 east of Gravenhurst. A quiet lake with access via a small river to Kahshe Lake and miles of boating.  This river is low, difficult to traverse in summer, however, with care, a motor boat can get thru.  Bass Lake Park is located on the south side of the Lake.  It is a Town park where you can launch your canoe and picnic if you are just visiting. Few people know of its existence, with small sand beach and picnic tables, it is used mostly by the local residents.

Bass Lake came by its name honestly, with Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass being the most common catch.  In the spring Pickerel come out of Kahshe, up the river, thru Bass Lake and up Garter Snake creek to a small 8′ falls.  This creek can only be accessed by canoe and you must jump over numerous logs in your trip.  Water flows from ponds, rivers and marshes north east of the lake thru Garter Snake creek and down the river to Kahshe Lake.  The lake is about ½ mile long and about ¼ mile in width at its widest point.  The lake is about 20 feet in depth and although it is possible to water ski on the lake, it is a far nicer lake to canoe.  The south shore where most cottages are built, has a sandy bottom.  Thomas Road serves most cottagers on the south side and a portion of the road is plowed during the winter.

The north side of Bass Lake has only a couple of cottages.  That side of the lake has a long prominent vacant granite ridge.  There are a couple of full time residents among the 28 or so cottages on the lake.  Everyone can walk to the local church.  (The Housey’s Rapids Free Methodist Church was built in 1892 and everyone is welcome regardless of their church affiliations at home. The ‘fire bell’ rings at 10:55 to announce their service.)  The ‘Summerland General Store’ is 1.5  miles away with the cottage basics and ice cream cones too!   Shopping is in Washago or Gravenhurst about an equal distance of 8 miles.  If you like to snowmobile the trail is accessed easily from Bass Lake.  Prices for cottages have recently been between $480,000. for a modest 2 bedroom and $660,000. with an exception at $2,800,000.  Expect to pay about $580,000 to $820,000. in 2021.  Call Muskoka Real Estate Services for more information at 705-687-7777.
